Completion intensity across the Powder River Basin

2108 horizontal oil wells in the region carry a filed proppant mass and a sound oil fit, all of them in Wyoming. The median well completed in 2011 took 2.34 million lb; in 2024, 25.17 million lb.

• Proppant is the sum of proppant over a well's filed frac treatments; where the state record has no mass, the largest FracFocus disclosure for the well.
• Lateral length is from the filed directional survey where one was parsed, else the span from the shallowest to the deepest perforation where that span exceeds a thousand feet. Where neither exists the lateral is unknown and left out of that median.
• Oil to limit is the recovery from the same Arps fit the map uses, to a limit of five barrels per producing day, and only where the fit was judged sound: exponent not pinned at a bound, log-space fit better than 0.5, forecast greater than nothing.
• Every figure is a median across the wells in the row. No regression, no normalisation to lateral length, no vintage adjustment.

• Montana's horizontal oil wells appear in the coverage table only. The Montana Board publishes completion reports as scanned documents, which are not in the store.
• The treatment record names the well, not the interval; a well fracked twice in its life is counted at its total mass and its latest year.
• Proppant mass is as filed. FracFocus masses are read from ingredient lists and were found on about one job in five, so the FracFocus share of the population is thin.
• The unit is the completion's, not the perforation's; a well completed across two units is counted under the first filed.
